RUNNING TIME: 1hr 47mins

In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches an impetuous Chieftain’s daughter’s island, she answers the Ocean’s call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.

Being the new movie in the Disney Princess franchise I was definitely going to watch Moana. The Disney franchise has increased their level of diversity in this movie by including a culture other than European. The movie is not specific as to where in Polynesia Moana is based and there is a mixture of different cultures within this movie. Moana as a character is interesting and free spirited and develops through the movie. Moana is a character that begins the movie as a selfish and as the movie progresses Maui’s backstory develops and he learns to be more selfless. The adventure storyline takes some minor unnecessary turns and there is a menagerie of antagonists that pop their head up through the hour and a half. The music is brilliant and will stay with you long after the credits. The plot twist at the end was unexpected and a lovely way to wrap up the storyline. There are some hidden easter eggs from previous Disney movies scattered throughout that were fun to find. Overall, the plot was well-done with some scenes that I did not feel were entirely necessary, but the music and characters kept the fun going.
