Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.
But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.
With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.
A beautifully told retelling of Rapunzel with a fantasy land cast forever in darkness and a young protagonist who cannot see. Beginning with the basic setup of the tale of Rapunzel: a maiden in a tower with long hair, this tale took it’s own course creating a dark and ominous world with a lost princess kept for safety in a tower by those who love her.
Alternating first person perspectives of Luna and Fowler provided different insight into the events that were unfolding. It was truly a unique experience reading from the perspective of a blind protagonist. Luna cannot see so all descriptors are given using other senses. This was a different experience which added a unique element to this fantasy tale.
There are many dark elements and gruelling, trying times through the book as both Folwer and Luna travel to try and find safety for Luna. With many fight scenes and tender moments, once your into the meat of this book it really hooked me in.
The ending has left me with so many questions with a cliffhanger that had me on the edge of my seat. This is a unique Fantasy retelling taking some elements of the original fairytale and creating a dark and mysterious world with a brave and vibrant protagonist.
Keep Calm and Read On,
