Jade Gariq is the daughter of a respected Taraqan leader, and the heiress to Gariq Industries—a large, cross-Portal trading company. Her future appears to be set.

Except for one thing: It’s a life that she doesn’t want.

Jade has always dreamed of joining the Traveller Force—the elite Taraqans who traverse the Betwixt, filled with terrifying beasts, and who protect and patrol the Dragonverse. Despite having been Travellers themselves once, Jade’s parents remain vehemently against risking their only daughter’s life. When Jade’s father dies suddenly, she inherits Gariq Industries, its assets, trade deals and social responsibilities.

It seems as though her fate has once again been decided.

Meanwhile, Axel—her close friend and secret crush—disappears without a trace. Then Jade discovers the circumstances surrounding her father’s death are not what they seem— her uncle Zorman suspects foul play. To find the truth and avenge her father’s death, Jade travels to an uncharted world, where she will learn more about her family, herself, loyalty, and betrayal than she ever imagined.

REVIEW:

A LoveOZYA novel that really had everything. With fantastic world-building and beguiling characters this was a fabulous novel. With action and and character dynamics that had me absolutely glued to the page.

Jade is a headstrong and enjoyable character that really guided the novel along. Through her need to join the noble Travellers and the horrible circumstances of her fathers death Jade has much motivation and a lot to explore through the novel.

An element I particularly enjoyed was the concept of portals traveling to different worlds. Bringing back memorabilia… kangaroo. You might need to read the novel to find out what I mean.  A fantastic novel that swept me up into this amazing fantasy world.

BLURB:

Being a bastard blows. Tilla would know. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children.

At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children.

Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards’ Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.

The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart—if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey …

REVIEW:

Fraught with twists and turns on every single page I was simply hooked from the very beginning. With engaging characters and action throughout this is a book I could not put down. Quite literally a rollercoaster for the reader, not knowing what the next page is going to bring. I loved every single minute of this book and the characters within. I cannot wait to continue the series.

MEMORABLE MONDAYS

memorable monday 1

Memorable Monday is a meme hosted by Escape in a Good Book. I’m excited to join in on this one because I love quotes, which was the driving force behind the creation of Memorable Mondays.

So… how do you participate? It’s simple ~

1) Share a quote that has captured your interest lately in a Memorable Monday post on your blog.

2) Come back here and leave the link to your post in the comment box below. If you don’t have a blog, I’d still love to read your quote. Leave it in the comment box instead of a link to a non-existent blog.:)

3) Visit other participants if you have time. It’s always nice to have visitors. There’s no overstaying your welcome this way, and they don’t have to offer the obligatory drinks. Or clean.

4) If you tweet your posts, feel free to use the hashtag #MemorableMonday.

The quote for this week is:

A girl, a band and a dream. And another girl.

Fran Worth is just another girl trying to make it through senior year in Aberdeen, Washington. But it’s 1993 and Fran is gay. Her comfortably off the radar life turns vividly public when a student nominates Fran for prom queen. When confronted by angry parents Fran refuses to back down, promising to deliver her hometown heroes in hopes of winning prom queen votes.

Fran heads out on a 24 hour road trip to Daily City, California with four friends, including her crush who may or may not be gay. Their plan? To sneak backstage to ask Kurt Cobain and Nirvana to come home and play prom. No problem. Unless something goes wrong.

REVIEW:

I was sincerely surprised by how much is packed into this novel. Small town prejudice, bullying, LBGTQIA rights, drug use, relationships and friendships are all packed into this high school / road trip novel about the journey of three different teens.

I really enjoyed the three different POV’s and how these all blended so well together. The road trip element of this novel added a little fun to the serious topics that were being broached within the novel . The characters themselves were so much fun for me to read and I really got a feel for the characters. In particular, Nikki who is a little spitfire who is so loyal and a big personality.

The conclusion of the novel wrapped up all the loose ends but in a realistic way, which was greatly appreciated. Life does not suddenly fix itself with no issues in sight. While there are still issues in life the development of the characters in their ability to manage these issues was the greatest development for the novel.

Overall, a fun and quirky novel with relatable characters that broached some really serious topics in a way that engaged readers. Truly a gem of a book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

chasing nirvana author

I graduated from Smith College and have a very expensive MFA from The American Film Institute. Some writers will tell you that their MFA was a waste of money. I won’t. It gave me great editorial skills and colorful, crazy experiences working as a screenwriter in LA. Cooking on fishing boats in Alaska paid my tuition. Screenwriting and working in the middle of the Bering Sea have a lot in common: hard work, unpredictability and occasionally both make you want to scream.

Besides my family and friends, I love rescue dogs, cats, cooking, baking, open water swimming, kayaking and reading, reading, reading, reading. Did I mention reading?

The third book in the New York Times bestselling and RITA®-award-winning Forget Tomorrow series is a thrilling conclusion to an epic trilogy.

Seventeen-year-old precognitive Olivia Dresden is an optimist. Since different versions of people’s futures flicker before her eyes, she doesn’t have to believe in human decency. She can literally see the path to goodness in each person—if only he or she would make the right decision. No one is more conflicted than her mother, Chairwoman Dresden, and Olivia is fiercely loyal to the woman her mother could be.

But when the Chairwoman captures Ryder Russell, a boy from the rebel Underground, Olivia is forced to reevaluate her notions of love and faith. With Ryder’s help, Olivia must come to terms with who her mother is in the present—and stop her before she destroys the world.

REVIEW:

This is a breathtaking conclusion to a seat-of-your-pants trilogy that left me gasping for breath at every turn. It’s hard to summarise this book without spoiling the series but this dystopian series is everything. The concept was unique and played out really well through all the books. The characters were amazing and I particularly love Olivia as she is an example of the social divide and bridging the gap. Overall, this is just a series I enjoyed from the very beginning. A great dystopian-esque, sci-fi series.
