REVIEW:

A cute romantic comedy that reminded me of Maid in Manhattan.

This story of Rachel, a maid, who suddenly gets thrown into a world of high society during a wedding at the hotel where she works. This is a quick read that I really enjoyed reading. The dynamics between the characters was interesting to delve into, especially the interactions between Rachel and her fellow staff when she is pretending to be a rich bridesmaid at the wedding.

I laughed myself silly. This book is exactly as advertised. A quick, flirty, romantic, comedic romp in the style of Maid in Manhattan. If you like romantic comedies and loved Maid in Manhattan I recommend you give this book a go.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Madelle completed four novels before Ellora’s Cave Publishing Inc. contracted to publish her debut romantic suspense, Diamond Lust—republished as Diamond Hunter—and a sexy, short free read, The Next Big Thing, in 2010.

When Madelle realized her author voice is more suited to light, humorous contemporary romance, she went waaaay back to her teen years for the Hollywood in Muskoka series setting. Madelle, her sisters, and assorted pets enjoyed idyllic summers at a lake in the District of Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of their top 20 Best of the World Must-see Places.

The Muskoka lakes’ forested shorelines are dotted with palatial properties owned by wealthy families and Hollywood celebrities. At sixteen, being neither rich nor famous, Madelle worked briefly as a chambermaid at the now-closed Delawana Inn, a local resort.

Madelle is retired from an engineering career in the federal public service and lives in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, with her husband. She tries to keep fit with cycling, Pilates, and yoga, and dreams of owning a waterfront cottage. Or at least a pool.

She tweets and posts on Facebook and Goodreads about Hollywood, filmmaking, Muskoka, and, of course, writing. She blogs the second Tuesday of the month at romancingthegenres.blogspot.com and occasionally on her own website.

REVIEW:

Bloodmoon is the third novel in the Bloodmark Saga. Therefore, this review may contain spoilers for previous books in the series. To view my review of the first book, Bloodmark, click here. To view my review of the second book, Bloodrealms, click here.

This book winds up the plot that has kept me hooked over the last two books. I have enjoyed this whirlwind ride following Ashling on her assent to power in the werewolf community. The relationships in this book really drive the plot. The characters have been fleshed out from prior books and really come to life in this final volume.

The overall mythology in this book was extremely interesting and left me hungry for more, to the point where I was conducting research after the last page. The ending was absolutely perfect and I would not have it any other way. An absolutely brilliant series that I recommend you try if you love mythology and werewolves.

Blood and Chocolate meets Underworld…

SUMMARY:

The Wraith Lord is hunting; his prize, the key to unleashing darkness and Chaos upon the eight Kingdoms.

For Diamond Gillon the war raging in the south seems a remote danger until her home is brutally attacked. Having lost everything she holds dear, Diamond is catapulted into a terrifying new world in which legendary beasts arise, magic is condemned and half blood fae, like her, have no rights. Despite her growing feelings for her saviour, Commander Hugo Casimir, he remains a paradox – not only is he a heartless killer, he is owned by the cruel immortal fae queen; a queen who will murder her own people for magic.

As Diamond’s circumstances become ever more perilous she is drawn deeper into Hugo’s world and discovers the lengths to which he will go to save what he holds dear. Will Hugo become her friend, her protector, or – an enemy not worthy of her trust?

A Bond of Venom and Magic is a tale of two people bound by magic and secrets, but trapped in the complexities of love and betrayal. It is the beginning of an epic journey, one that will test Diamond’s resolve and determination to battle an evil that threatens not only her world but that of Eternity, the land of The Guardians and The Goddess.

WRITING STYLE:

The writing style in this book was beautifully descriptive and flowed well. This book is told in the third person following the main character of Diamond. The world building and mythology of this book was unique and a pleasure to learn.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:

The main character of Diamond begins this story with a terrible loss and the reader gets to witness how Diamond deals with this loss and with being thrust into a violent fight for survival whilst she learns about the magic she always knew was there but never fully understood. Diamond does not start off as a strong character but her development through this book is amazing.

THEMES:

Inner Strength: Diamond displays a lot of inner strength to go through the trials she must face in this book and come out the other end even a mild resemblance of the girl she once was.

Loss: Loss also plays a strong role in the development of Diamond’s character, whether it is loss of innocence or loss of a loved one.

Love: This book did not have a case of the insta-love (which many readers can find frustrating). However, there was a lot of chemistry from the get go. Sometimes I felt Diamond relying to heavily on her love interest, but I do understand this seeing as Diamond has come from a fairly sheltered upbringing an is rather naive at times.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

This is a beautifully vivid book with brilliant world building. It is classed as a YA Fantasy book but there is some vivid battle scenes and mildly explicit language, but nothing uncommon to modern day YA books.

The romance in this book was epic for me. It was steamy and beautiful and mixed with the gritty world created in this book was absolutely amazing.

The world building was nothing less than spectacular and the descriptions of each of the characters painted a picture in my minds eye. This book started right smack bang in the middle of the action and did not slow from there.

I am amazed that this is a debut novel and am waiting on baited breath for what comes next. This is definitely a new High Fantasy to keep an eye on and I highly recommend it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Karen Tomlinson is the author of The Goddess and the Guardians series of Young Adult fantasy books. Book one A Bond of Venom and Magic will be released October 14th 2016.

Karen has always been an avid reader. Her taste in books is eclectic but she likes nothing better than an exciting fantasy, set in a new and magical world. She lives in Derbyshire, England, with her husband, twin girls and her dalmatian, Poppy. Karen trained as a nurse and currently works as a resuscitation and clinical skills trainer, this involves training a wide variety of health care professionals and medical students in acute patient care. In addition to writing, and reading whenever she can, Karen likes to keep active. She has been training at Shotokan karate since being thirteen, likes walking, mountain biking and (for something completely different) cake decorating. She is currently working on book two in The Goddess and the Guardians series.

About me!

As soon as I could read I spent hours getting lost in the new worlds books could give me. Spending my pocket money had to be done (obviously) but not on sweets, well, not many…I spent my money on books. Back then it was Enid Blyton’s Famous Five which sparked my young mind. I didn’t rest until I had the whole set, then I migrated to the secret seven…(there was no Harry Potter then) As a teenager I would trawl through all my mum and dad’s discarded books. It was probably highly inappropriate for a thirteen year old to be reading swoony Mills and Boon romances followed by Ian Flemming, Alistair Maclean and Wilbur Smith!
Because I read anything and everything I could get my hands on back then, I now have an eclectic taste in books. I will read anything that catches my eye and absolutely love illustrated book covers! In my late teens I discovered fantasy and that genre has stayed my firm favourite. I am and will always remain a complete sucker for a fantasy with kick ass characters and worlds steeped in magic and romance!

REVIEW:

An interesting take on the werewolf mythology.

I enjoyed reading this book told in the third person focusing on Nessa who undergoes a change after being bitten. The general plot was easy to follow, however it was slow moving at times and my attention lagged in places.

I really enjoyed the complexity of the characters, especially Nessa’s links to animals and running. The mystery of the grey wolf added intrigue to the plot. There was the beginnings of a romance that I hope will be expanded upon in book two.

Hopefully, the next book will tie up some plot points that were left open ended.

REVIEW:

Red Riding Hood has became even more kick-ass then ever before.

Marissa Meyer has done it again. This retelling of Little Red Riding Hood was epic. I loved how this story wove itself into the prior book in The Lunar Chronicles; it could easily stand on its own. Twining together fairytale retellings with the sci-fi genre lent an edge to this retelling that I have not seen in a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood before.

The general concept of the source material can be seen, but it is twisted and molded to make it something completely different and yet, somehow, familiar. Scarlet is looking for her Grandmother who has been kidnapped and must enlist the help of a street fighter from off the beaten track (Wolf). But, can she trust him, should she?

The relationship between Scarlet and Wolf had me turning the pages rapid fire in anticipation for what was to come. The hate to love relationships is one I love to read about and it was no different in this book. Wolf is the sci-fi version of the bad boy every girl wants to have and to see this trope translated into this genre was amazing.

Sporadically through the book there were scenes with Cinder and what has happened since the cliffhanger at the end of the first book. New characters are introduced and I hope I get to see more of them in future books. By basing Scarlet in a non-major and industrialized area we are able to see the trickling in of information about the events of the first book as Scarlet starts to put the pieces together.

Overall, Marissa Meyer really gets my love of fairytales and has created an amazing world in this series that I cannot wait to explore further in the future books in The Lunar Chronicles series.

The wolf laws are rigid and barbaric, and Ashling’s illicit love for Grey, if discovered, will mean his death. But when Ashling and Grey get trapped in the blood-soaked depths of the Bloodrealms, they find ancient horrors far greater than Ashling’s father’s rule.

With betrayal around every corner and old nemeses set to destroy Ashling, she is more divided than ever between the destiny she didn’t choose and the love that she did. To make matters worse, her decision will not only set the course of her future, but the future of her entire race.

REVIEW:

Bloodrealms is the second novel in the Bloodmark saga. Therefore, there may be some unintentional spoilers within this review for the first book, Bloodmark. To view my review of Bloodmark, click here.

We all talk about the love triangle, in Bloodrealms there is something like a love pentagon going on. Ashling is a werewolf princess and therefore must suffer multiple prospective romantic interests when she favours one in particular. The bloody and savage fight for Ashlings hand is waiting over everyones head through the book.

Werewolf politics and the intricacies of the werewolf world, in particular the sexist qualities of the world were particularly interesting to me. I am really interested in this series and loving every page. The protagonist of Ashling is displayed as a capable and strong feminine character who has the ability to protect herself. The dynamics of the different characters and their relationships to Ashling kept me intrigued through the fast paced plot.

The Selection meets Underworld.

REVIEW:

A unique and beautiful story.

The Perfect Tear centred around Eleanor and her connection to Earth and Tsera and the power of song. I wouldn’t say this was a book I couldn’t put down, the overall plot and flow of the story worked really well but it took me quite a while to really gel with the story.

I would have liked more interactions between the romantic interests. The idea of insta-love is overridden by the time jump, in which the relationship develops. The settings combined a medieval-esque fantasy Earth and an inter-dimensional supernatural world.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book linking song and a protagonist who is thrown into the middle of something that is much bigger than anything in her previously small world.  If you enjoy a protagonist who gets thrust into a supernatural wold, magical objects and a mission to save the world I suggest you give The Perfect Tear a try.

REVIEW:

An interesting contemporary read about growing up and moving on with life.

This book is told in the third person from the perspective of Millie who is trying to get through college and get her manuscript read. The friendships and Millie’s emotional connections with others within this book was one of the most enjoyable parts for me. I did feel the story begin to lag in parts and I needed to focus and push through. I am glad I did though, this book was interesting and, as I said before I enjoyed the character relationships and character development immensely.

REVIEW:

Bargains struck for vengeance sake… what could possibly go wrong?

This is a YA contemporary romance that delivers on everything you expect. This book is told in the third person from the alternating perspectives of Faith and Kyle whose paths have never crossed, except for when they strike a bargain to see pay back on a common foe. Reputations can be deceiving. The development of these two characters and their relationship was heartwarming and any book that can link in musical theatre has me hooked.

A thoroughly enjoyable read about two unlikely friends who become so much more. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light hearted read based in high school. When you need a lovely little contemporary or something to get you out of your reading slump I recommend you give The Bad Boy Bargain a try. 10 Things I Hate About You meets Morgan Matson.
